About Thomas Jefferson Elder High and Industrial School

Thomas Jefferson Elder founded this school in 1888 under the name Sandersville High and Industrial School. It was Washington County's first school for Black students. Shortly afterward, local leaders renamed it the T.J. Elder High School. The current school building went up in 1927 and still stands on the same site. Today the building functions as a community center and contains a museum that covers the school's past along with other aspects of county history. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
