This park protects a large prehistoric American Indian site on the east bank of the Ocmulgee River. Many different Indigenous cultures lived on this land over thousands of years, beginning with early hunters during the Paleo-Indian era. Starting around 900 CE, Mississippian builders raised mounds for their leaders, and several of them still stand. Visitors can see the Great Temple Mound, which rises about 55 feet, along with the Earth Lodge that once served as a council chamber, and the Funeral Mound used for burials. A museum displays more than 2,000 artifacts, and roughly 8 miles of trails wind through the grounds. The park is also known for a major archaeological excavation in the past that employed hundreds of workers and uncovered millions of objects.
