About Old Governor's Mansion

This Milledgeville house served as the official home of Georgia's governors from 1839 to 1868. Its columned facade is considered an excellent example of High Greek Revival design. Tours cover the building's history, the people who lived and worked there, both free and enslaved, and the social tensions of antebellum Georgia. The mansion was briefly seized during Sherman's march in 1864. A major restoration returned the interior to its appearance around 1851. Today it operates as a museum, is a National Historic Landmark, and is affiliated with the Smithsonian.
