Restored railroad depot in a preserved coal-era rail town, now a visitor center within New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.
Thurmond, WV
Thurmond was once a prominent railroad hub on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, where coal, steam power, and steel tracks shaped local life. Its depot has been restored and now serves as a park visitor center, with exhibits and period furnishings that recall the height of railroading. During the early 1900s the town boomed on coal revenue, with busy banks, stores, saloons, and hotels. A decline followed the arrival of diesel locomotives and reduced local coal output, and most residents left. Today the town remains largely free of modern development, offering a look at the industrial past and the National Park Service's work to protect that heritage.
