This National Park Service site in Tupelo, Mississippi, commemorates a Civil War engagement fought in mid-July 1864, also called the Battle of Harrisburg. Union troops, among them soldiers from the United States Colored Troops, pushed into the town while Confederate fighters, though disorganized, resisted hard. Neither army won outright, but the Union achieved its aim of keeping Confederate forces away from railroads in Tennessee. The site is small, covering about one acre on Highway 6 in town, and is administered by the Natchez Trace Parkway.
