Whetstone Gulf State Park is built around a gorge three miles long and about 380 feet deep, cut into the eastern edge of the Tug Hill Plateau south of Lowville. A loop trail of about six miles follows the rim, and the park also has a man-made swimming area, a picnic area along Whetstone Creek and wooded campsites. A reservoir above the gorge is stocked for fishing. Day use is $7 per vehicle. In winter the trails are used for cross-country skiing.
