Widewater State Park sits on a peninsula about 40 miles south of Washington, D.C., with shorelines on both Aquia Creek and the Potomac River. The park has a visitor center with exhibits on local history and wildlife, two short hiking trails, picnic shelters, playgrounds, canoe and kayak launches, and a motorboat ramp. Four primitive paddle-in tent sites are available, while cabins and traditional campgrounds are planned in the master plan. Swimming is not recommended because of currents and hidden hazards. Its land is split into several parcels, and some are still under construction.
