About African-American Monument

The African-American Monument stands on the cobblestone riverfront in Savannah, Georgia, near River Street and Bull Street. Dedicated in 2002, it shows a family of newly freed people stepping forward, with broken chains at their feet. Savannah College of Art and Design professor Dorothy Spradley created the sculpture, and retired educator Abigail Jordan helped fund and push for it. The base features chained and praying hands and a quotation by Maya Angelou. The monument is framed as a tribute to the Africans brought through Savannah and to the community's later contributions to the city and region.
