The Telfair Academy occupies a two-story mansion that British architect William Jay designed in a neoclassical style. Built for the Telfair family, the house was later reworked into a public art museum in 1886. Its galleries hold 18th and 19th century American and European fine and decorative art, along with 19th and 20th century works from the permanent collection. Visitors can see the Rotunda, which has murals by Carl Brandt, and the Sculpture Gallery, which displays plaster copies of Greco-Roman sculptures. Gari Melchers helped shape the collection in the early 1900s. The Bird Girl statue, moved from Bonaventure Cemetery for safekeeping, is displayed here too.
