Founded in 1967, the Anacostia Community Museum is part of the Smithsonian and was the first federally funded community museum in the United States. Its rotating exhibitions look at city life and social issues such as gentrification, environmental change and employment, often through the history of Washington's own neighborhoods. Admission is free and so is the parking on site. The museum is in southeast Washington about 5 miles from the National Mall, so plan a drive, bus or Metro trip rather than a walk.
