Brookhaven State Park protects 1,638 acres of the Long Island Pine Barrens in Ridge and Wading River, about 74 miles east of New York City, with scattered wetlands among the pines. The land belonged to Brookhaven National Laboratory until the park was set up in 1971. About 25 miles of multi-use trails, including the Brookhaven Trail, are open year-round for hiking, biking and horseback riding. There is no entrance fee, but bow hunting is allowed in season, so check dates before a winter walk.
