Pay respects at the Westchester cemetery and mausoleums where Malcolm X, James Baldwin, Thelonious Monk and Joan Crawford are memorialized.

Ferncliff is a non-sectarian cemetery in Hartsdale, about 25 miles north of Midtown Manhattan, organized in 1902. Its first mausoleum, the Ferncliff Mausoleum or Cathedral of Memories, went up in 1927, and two more large community mausoleums followed. The cemetery lists Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz, James Baldwin, Thelonious Monk, Joan Crawford, Aaliyah, Ed Sullivan and Jerome Kern among its notable burials. It is a working cemetery where funerals take place Monday through Saturday, so keep voices low. Without a car, take the Harlem line to Hartsdale station and a taxi from there.
