Longhorn Cavern State Park, about 1.5 hours northwest of Austin, is built around a limestone cave carved by an underground river and named a National Natural Landmark in 1971. In the late 1920s locals ran it as a nightclub with shows broadcast to San Antonio. From 1934 to 1942 the Civilian Conservation Corps cleared tons of silt and guano, built stairs and walkways inside, and put up the park's stone buildings and observation tower. Entry to the grounds is free, and the cavern is seen on paid guided tours. The park is day use only, with over a mile of nature trails.
