Montauk County Park stretches about 1.8 square miles from Montauk Highway to Block Island Sound, just east of Montauk village and next to Montauk Point State Park. Inside it are Big Reed Pond, a National Natural Landmark; a Montaukett village and burial ground; Deep Hollow Ranch, started in 1658 and billed as the oldest cattle ranch in the country, which offers horseback rides to the beach; and Third House, where Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders stayed after the Spanish-American War. Surfcasters fish for striped bass and bluefish at Shagwong Point, and leashed dogs are welcome.
