The West Point Foundry ran in Cold Spring from 1817 to about 1911, building some of the country's first locomotives, iron pipe for New York City's water system and the Parrott rifled cannons used in the Civil War. Scenic Hudson's 90-acre preserve along Foundry Brook lets you walk trails past the remains of foundry buildings, with signs and an audio tour that explain the site; bring headphones. The ruins became a National Historic Landmark in 2021. Entry is free, the preserve is a walk from the Cold Spring train station, and the Putnam History Museum nearby has foundry artifacts.
