About Putnam Memorial State Park

Often called Connecticut's Valley Forge, this park preserves the site where about 3,000 soldiers under General Israel Putnam spent the hard winter of 1778 to 1779. Created in 1887, it is Connecticut's oldest state park. An interpretive trail through its 183 acres passes a 44-foot granite obelisk from 1888, reconstructed guardhouse and officers' quarters, chimney remains from the soldiers' huts and Philip's Cave, a glacial rock shelter. The visitor center, a restored 1893 pavilion, shows tools, buttons and ammunition found on site. Putnam Park Pond is stocked for fishing.
