About Sterling Forest State Park

Sterling Forest State Park is a large, mostly undeveloped woodland near heavily populated parts of the region. Its forest provides habitat for black bears, hawks, songbirds, and many rare plants and invertebrates, and it also protects a watershed serving millions of people. Visitors can hike, hunt with a park permit, and fish. The Lautenberg Visitor Center overlooks Sterling Lake and displays exhibits on the local environment and mining history. The park also connects to the American Revolution, since the Sterling Ironworks produced a large chain used to block the Hudson River near West Point in 1778.
