Tallulah Gorge State Park

338 Jane Hurt Yarn Dr · Tallulah Falls, GA

Why you should go…

Tallulah Gorge is a canyon about two miles long and nearly 1,000 feet deep, cut by the Tallulah River. Rim trails lead to several overlooks, and a staircase drops to a suspension bridge that sways 80 feet above the rocky bottom, with views of the river and waterfalls. Hiking the gorge floor takes one of 100 free permits issued each day, and proper footwear is required. The Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center covers the area's history, and towers from Karl Wallenda's 1970 tightrope walk still stand.

Check the forecast the morning of and keep an indoor backup in your pocket for the day it turns.

  • Shoes, water, sun cover

The three things that decide whether you last the whole outing or cut it short after an hour.

  • Parking and launches fill early

On a nice weekend, lots and trailheads are often full by mid-morning.

  • Daylight shrinks in shoulder season

Spring and fall visits need an earlier start than the same trip in July.
