Traveler's Rest sits near the old King's Highway and Unicoi Turnpike in Stephens County. James R. Wyly built the inn around 1815 to serve travelers crossing the Appalachians. Devereaux Jarrett later bought it, enlarged it, and made it the home of his large Tugaloo River plantation. Visitors can tour the house, see original furnishings and artifacts, including pieces by Massachusetts cabinetmaker Caleb Shaw, and walk self-guided trails. The site was named a National Historic Landmark in 1964.
