The Newburyport Superior Courthouse is one of the oldest continuously active courthouses in the nation, which was established in 1764, along with the accompanying Bartlett Mall, which is the oldest public ground space in Newburyport.

The Merrimack River Basin, which ends in Newburyport, is the 4th largest river basin in New England. The name was adopted by early European settlers from Merruasquamack, a name meaning "swift water place," which was given to the river by Native American tribes.

The Coast Guard was born in Newburyport - which named the city an official Coast Guard City in August 2012.
