About Edgell Memorial Library

Built in 1872 by local residents as a memorial to Civil War soldiers, this building was Framingham's first free-standing public library. It is one of the few surviving Victorian Gothic buildings in the area and stands on the Centre Common. When plans for a new library threatened demolition in 1963, townspeople and the Framingham Historical Society campaigned to keep it. Today the Framingham History Center uses the building for monthly programs, rotating exhibitions, a museum shop, storage, and offices.
