115 John Brown Road, Lake Placid, NY 12946 · Lake Placid, NY
John Brown moved to this hillside farm in North Elba in 1849 to help Black families settling nearby at Timbuctoo, and he was buried here after his 1859 execution. The state has run the site since 1896. You can tour the farmhouse, see the fenced family graveyard and a 1935 statue of Brown, and visit the Dreaming of Timbuctoo exhibit in the barn. Hiking trails cross the grounds, which are open for snowshoeing and skiing in winter. House admission is free, and the site is 3 miles from Lake Placid.
