Owl's Head Park covers about 24 acres of hills on a glacial moraine in Bay Ridge. The land was the estate of state senator Henry C. Murphy, who signed the Brooklyn Bridge legislation here, and later of manufacturer E. W. Bliss, which is why some locals call it Bliss Park. The city bought it in 1928 and tore down the mansion and its observatory tower in 1932, but Bliss's iron gates came back to the southeastern entrance in 2004. The slopes look across New York Harbor to Manhattan, Staten Island and New Jersey and turn into sledding hills in winter. There are paths, a playground, spray showers, a dog run, basketball courts and Millennium Skate Park.
