A 90-Year Recipe for Saltwater Taffy
you don't have to wait until summer to enjoy summertime treats
If you’ve been making saltwater taffy since 1927, you’re probably pretty good at it. Cabot’s Candy in Provincetown may have started small, selling hand-pulled taffy at Cape Cod fairs, but now boasts both a factory and store. “We have a great local following and we have families that have been coming for years,” says owner Jen Kurani.
Being in business for 90 years means they’ve had a long time to perfect their craft, and it shows. “I would say our saltwater taffy and our fudge are the number one sellers,” she says, which is no surprise considering how they make over 20 flavors of fudge and 36 flavors of taffy. Watermelon, orange pineapple, root beer, and sea salt caramel taffy, among others, can be packed up individually, or come as a pre-mixed pound. They even keep their ingredients local, getting their sea salt right on the Cape.
But when you’ve been around for that long, you also get the chance to expand. The store makes its own popcorn, brittle, and sea-salt caramel. There’s even nostalgic and classic candy, which will delight parents and grandparents as they introduce the kids to the candy of their childhoods.
Best of all, you don’t have to wait until summer to visit, as Cabot’s Candy is one of the few places in Provincetown to stay open year-round. Kurani says, “It’ll be snowing out and people will be coming in to get saltwater taffy.”
