While trains no longer make their way down the whole Cape anymore, there was a time when rail travel was a popular way to get to and from Cape Cod. The Chatham Railroad Museum, located at 153 Depot Road in Chatham, is housed in the railroad depot - which has been restored quite nicely - that served Chatham for nearly 50 years. The Chatham Railroad Company finally stopped servicing the area in 1937, once improving highways became the preferred mode of transport.
The Museum features hundreds of exhibits, including the New York Central model locomotives that were used at the 1939 New York World's Fair.
So bring the train lovers in your family to this enchanting little Museum. It is child-friendly and even has a 1910 restored wooden caboose that kids and adults can explore.
This Museum is not only a great remembrance of the locomotive history of the town of Chatham, but is also wonderful for kids who love trains and want to learn more about them.
Entrance to the Museum is free, although donations are accepted. The Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10am to 4pm, from mid-June through mid-September.
