Five Sweet Spots on Route 6A
Dessert Spots for Cape Cod Road Trips
Every good road trip needs dessert. Fortunately for travelers, Cape Cod's Route 6A boasts plenty of options for delicious summer treats. Also known as the Old King's Highway, this historic route is one of the top scenic byways in the country, winding its way through picturesque villages and breathtaking saltmarshes. Spend a couple of hours or a couple of days exploring the dozens of sights, shops, and attractions and be sure to stop for some sweet treats along the way.
1. Ice Cream Sandwich - Sandwich
There are few places in the world that take summer ice cream as seriously as Cape Cod. Start of a road trip along Route 6A with a stop at Sandwich's aptly-named Ice Cream Sandwich. In business since 1982, Ice Cream Sandwich is the only shop in Sandwich that makes its own ice cream and Belgian waffle cones. Choose from two dozen flavors or try one of the eleven soft-serve options, ranging from vanilla and chocolate to watermelon, bubble gum, and pineapple.
2. Hallet's Store - Yarmouth Port
Hallet's Store in Yarmouth Port is a tangible connection to a bygone era on the Cape. The historic building has housed this family-owned business since 1889, offering visitors a chance to take a step back in time and enjoy a Cape Cod tradition. Hallet's ice cream is made daily on the premises in a process that takes about eight hours, and the store also serves fresh bread and homemade sandwiches.
3. GoodFellas Gelateria - Dennis
For something a little European, check out GoodFellas Gelateria in Dennis. A relative newcomer to the crowded Cape dessert scene, GoodFellas serves authentic Italian gelato and sorbet in over two dozen flavors that frequently rotate. The unique texture and intense flavor of GoodFellas' gelato is a fun alternative to traditional Cape ice cream, while the shop's quaint patio provides a picturesque atmosphere for a summer excursion.
4. Hot Chocolate Sparrow - Orleans
Part trendy coffee shop and part old-fashioned candy store, Orleans' popular Hot Chocolate Sparrow offers something for every visitor. A local institution for over two decades, Hot Chocolate Sparrow's café serves specialty coffee and espresso, two dozen flavors of ice cream and frozen yogurt, and sandwiches, while the candy store sells fudge, hand-dipped chocolates, and indulgent desserts. Stop in for a latte or an ice cream cone and be sure to pick up some fudge for the road.
5. Ice Cream Café - Orleans
There is no better way to finish off a summer road trip on the Cape than with some homemade ice cream. The Ice Cream Café in Orleans offers enough delicious variety to satisfy any visitor's sweet tooth. Ice Cream Café's over forty flavors of ice cream range from the traditional chocolate chip and pistachio to the adventurous pumpkin pie, key lime, and chocolate chili pepper, all of which are made by hand on the premises. For even more variety, try Ice Cream Café's creamy soft serve, over twenty-flavors of hard serve yogurt, and non-dairy and vegan ice creams.
