Salem is a historic town located just a short distance north of Boston, MA. The town is famous for its role in the witch trials of 1692. Even more, Salem has a maritime history dating back to its days as a thriving port city, and traces of famed author Nathanial Hawthorne, who wrote many of his works in Salem, can be seen throughout the city. Today, the downtown area of Salem is bustling with plenty of historical attractions, fabulous restaurants, and unique and funky boutique shopping.
The Peabody Essex Museum has been a top destination in Salem for many years. In 2003 they expanded and built a contemporary glass atrium, furthering their exhibition space to make them a world-class museum. The Peabody Essex showcases the maritime history of the area as well as highlights the impact of trade around the world. They’ve had multiple award-winning seasonal exhibitions, such as the renowned Faberge Revealed exhibition in 2013.
The House of Seven Gables is one of the most easily recognized historic attractions in Salem. This attraction is compromised of several different buildings distinguished by their trademark gables. The house, once called the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, is the oldest surviving 17th century wooden mansion in New England, and guests will find all sorts of secrets as they tour the beautiful ocean-side estate.
Another must-visit historic stop is the Salem Witch Museum. The museum is located conveniently in the heart of downtown Salem, and overlooks the beautiful Salem Commons. The Salem Witch Museum focuses on the trials of 1692 and takes you on a journey of the 180 who were falsely accused during that fated summer.
